Siemens to slash thousand jobs

FRANKFURT—German engineering giant Siemens, which is increasingly feeling the effects of the economic downturn, is to axe “thousands” of jobs, the financial daily Boersen Zeitung reported on Tuesday.

Last month, Siemens chief executive Peter Loescher said the company was drawing up a program to cut costs, boost productivity and efficiency.

While the program would not primarily be implemented by reducing the headcount, job cuts could not be ruled out completely, Loescher said at the time.

At the end of July, Siemens warned that it would be harder to achieve its annual profit targets, as the gloomy global economic mood weighs on orders, especially in the field of renewable energy.

It was the second time Siemens had been forced to revise down its targets this year.

Phyllis Diller dead at 95

Queen of comedy Phyllis Diller died this morning while at sleep in her Brentwood home surrounded by family.

Diller was 95. Recently he had falle, hurting wrist and hip but this injury has nothing to do with her death according to her agent Fred Wostbrock.

In 1999 she had suffered a heart attack and was later fitted with a pacemaker.

As a professional comedian, Diller was a late bloomer: The Ohio native was an Alameda, Calif., mother of five when she made her nightclub debut at the Purple Onion in San Francisco in 1955 — at age 37.

Known for her adept timing and precisely structured jokes, Diller took pride in being able to deliver as many as 12 punch lines per minute.

She also had a stint starring in “Hello, Dolly!” during its original 1964-1970 run on Broadway. But the outlandish Diller always shined best in nightclubs, showrooms and concert halls, where one of her favorite targets was her domestic life, including her fictional husband “Fang.”

Good bye Phyllis Diller.

Olympic Gold medal resale value

The United States will pay 15,000 pounds ($25,000) to gold medallists while Australians will receive A$20,000 ($20,900), feature on an Australia stamp and get a flight upgrade home.

Russia, battling Britain to keep its third place in the gold medal table, has promised athletes 85,000 pounds ($135,000) for golds while there are reports Italy has offered 116,000 pounds ($182,000).

China, which is jostling with the United States for top of the gold medals tally, has not released details of financial incentives but the Chinese language Sports Weekly reported they were likely to hand gold winners $51,000.

Singaporean athletes are being offered one of the biggest incentives with an offer of 1 million Singapore dollars ($800,000) for a gold. Singapore has never won gold at the Olympics.

India has promised coaching jobs to athletes who win medals.

British athletes, however, will have to settle for national glory and their image on a stamp rather than cash.

British Olympic chiefs are of the view that financial rewards do not significantly impact the motivation of athletes to reach the podium and it is their desire to compete at the Olympics that is their main driving force.
