Great Britain wins first gold

on August 1, 2012
Great Britain’s Helen Glover and Heather Stanning have won a gold medal in the women’s Pair – the Host Nation’s first of London 2012 – while Ukraine took gold in the women’s Quadruple Sculls.
A joyous, pressure relieving wave of emotion rolled over Great Britain as their gun combination of Heather Stanning and Helen Glover scored Great Britain’s first gold medal of the Games.

After the race, Stanning said:  ‘I’m absolutely shattered and want to collapse but I also just want to jump up and down.’

On leading out from the front, she added: ‘We wanted to do what we have done all season. We didn’t want to give anything back.’

Glover, 26, a former PE teacher from Penzance, Cornwall, has been rowing for only four years after starting through the Sporting Giants scheme, which was set up by UK Sport to identify British sporting talent with a view to London 2012.

Stanning, 27, from Lossiemouth, Moray is a captain in the Royal Artillery and the women were paired together in the Bath training programme only three years ago.

Stanning received a message from her colleagues in Afghanistan after the race and thanked them for their support.

Glover added: “If I can do it so can you. Take the chance to do something, do anything. Work hard and do your best and you can achieve anything.”
