The number behind Olympics

LONDON has hosted 2 Summer Olympics, in 1908 and 1948.

In 1908, there were 2,008 athletes competing which includes 37 women.

In 1948, there were 4,104 athletes competing which includes 390 women.

Today, 2012, there were 10,500 athletes. Competing for 2,300 medals. With only 1.34% of gold in an Olympic gold medal. Though during the year 1912, it was the last year that the Olympic medals were made entirely in gold.

Michael Phelps of the US won 20 Olympic medals, making him the most decorated Olympian of all-time. He surpass Larysa Latynina of USSR a gymnast holding a 18 Olympic medals. Surpassing more the 13 Olympic medals of Marjorie Gestring a US diving athlete in 1936, making her the youngest ever gold medal winner.
