Olympics – First Saudi woman lost in Judo

on August 5, 2012

Judoka Wojdan Shaherkani became the first woman from Saudi Arabia to compete at the Olympics. She broke down in tears after her debut lasted just 82 seconds before she was thrown by her opponent Melissa Mojica of Puerto Rico.

Shaherkani said “I’m proud, I’m happy and I want to continue in judo. I want to thank the fans for their support”. She added she was disturbed and afraid at the beginning since this is her first time in a big competition and there was lot of pressure due to the hijab issue.

A hijab is a religous code that a women should wear a head covering when out in the public.

Because of the hijab issue Shakerkani almost lost her opportunity after International Judo Federation president Marius Vizer said she wouldn’t be allowed to compete in a hijab. But in the end, a deal was decided between judo official and Saudi authorities and she appeared in a black, swimming cap.

I am happy for her that she able to accomplished her dream to be one of the Olympians, breaking the history. Good decision that authorities gave her the freedom and equality. Thumbs up.
