Yannick Agnel from France won the 200 meters freestyle to claim his second Olympic title. He is just 20, anchored the French sprint freestyle squad to victory over the United States last night when he overhauled Ryan Lochte in the final 10 meters.
Yannic Agnel led from the start and enjoyed a dominant victory in one minute 43.14 seconds with Beijing silver medallist Park Tae Hwan and 400m freestyle champion Sun Yang sharing silver while world champion Lochte was locked out of the medals in fourth.
Phelps had a better night, although it remains difficult to judge what sort of form he is in. He advanced to tonight’s final of the 200m butterfly fourth fastest but again he faded over the closing stages.
Whether that was through fatigue – there have been questions asked over the amount of training he has done in the build-up to the Games – or simply saving himself for the final will become clearer this evening, and the good news for the American is that there will not be a Frenchman in sight.
